Water is the cornerstone of survival for all living creatures. Due to the climate change around the globe, farmers can’t rely on the rainfall all the time and have started looking for new watering systems for their farmlands and these systems are called irrigation systems. While rain-fed farming is the natural application to the soil through direct rainfall, irrigation is the artificial application to the soil through various watering systems.

Types of Irrigation Systems

There are too many irrigation types around the globe and the right type of irrigation must be selected depending on the soil type, climate, crop and resources.

Drip Irrigation

Drip irrigation method is also known as trickle irrigation and it consists a system where it allows water to drip slowly to the roots of plants through narrow tubes. This method allows water to be directly transferred to the roots of the crops. Its water conservation is efficiently high and reduces water usage while stifling the growth of the crops. The highest efficiency can be taken if it’s used on the crops that are planted in lines or rows. Irrigation method saves time and labor after the system is installed. It also prevents fungal disease by minimizing the contact of water to the leaves, stems and plant fruits.

Sprinkler Irrigation

In sprinkler irrigation, water is transferred to the central locations on the field and distributed with high-pressure sprinklers or guns. These sprinklers or guns can also be mounted on moving platforms connected to the water source by a hose. This type of irrigation can be used for watering the lawns, golf courses, crops and landscapes. However, it’s not as effective as the drip irrigation since the water is not reaching directly to the roots and it consumes more water than the drip irrigation system.

Importance of Irrigation Systems

1. Life-Saver When There is No Rainfall

Irrigation system may be a life saver for your farmland when there’s no rainfall. Without the irrigation, the food production rate in the world would never be enough.

2. It’s Effective

When crops or plants are watered irregularly, this means hard-to-reach areas may not get sufficient water.  However, a well-designed irrigation system transfers all the water the plants need and increases the productivity of the plants.

3. It Contributes to Economic Growth

Irrigation method ensures the food production continues regardless of the climate and weather conditions. Food production continuation means continuous income and employment. The substantial income growth means a thriving economy. So, we can say that irrigation also contributes to the economic growth of the countries.
